High-performance Films

PEEK

Polyetheretherketone (PPEK) is a high-performance semi-crystalline film that exhibits high thermal and chemical stability, high abrasion and wear resistance, and outstanding mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. This class of films has also good resistance to combustion and good electrical performance. Certain grades are also aproved for food contact. Typical applications include electrical insulation, loudspeaker membranes, and various thermoformed thin parts.

PI/PEI

Polyimides (PI) (Kapton®) are high performance engineering films of amber to transparent color. They have outstanding thermal, mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties over a wide temperature range and are often the best choice for very demanding applications where very high mechanical strength in combination with high temperature, corrosion, and wear resistance is required. The electrical properties are of excellent stability under variable temperature, humidity and frequency conditions. Polyimide films are widely used as dielectric and insulating films due to their stable properties and outstanding dielectric properties, for example, for insulating copper conductors and magnet wires used at high temperatures.

POM

Polyacetal (POM), also known as Celcon®, is a high performance film. It offers high tensile and flexural strength, and high rigidity over a broad temperature range. Other important properties are low wear, high impact toughness, and long-term creep and fatigue resistance. It also has excellent resistance to many chemicals, fuels, and oils.

PTFE

polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films (TefzelTM) have unique performance properties. They are known for their outstanding thermal, electrical, and chemical resistance and can be used both at very high (up to 530 K) and extremely low temperatures. Their coefficient of friction is among the lowest of all polymers (self-lubricating and non-stick). PTFE  film is ideal for applications where broad chemical resistance, high durability, wide service temperature range, excellent dielectric properties, low friction, and non-stick properties are required. Major applications include pharmaceutical cap liners, sterile packaging, release and anti-corrosive liners, cable insulation, and numerous others.

PSF, PSU

Polysulfone is an amber transparent film of high thermal, oxidative, and hydrolytic stabilitiy. Its impact resistance is somwhat lower than that of polycarbonate but the film has high strength and good electrical properties. It also has exceptional steam resistance and thermoformability. It is resistant to many chemicals, including acids, alkalies, and oils, but it is attacked by low polar solvents such as esters, ketones, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The film is used in electronics, medical devices, automotive and aerospace industries for applications where superior thermal and mechanical properties relative to conventional films are required.

PPO (Noryl)

Polyphenylene ether (PPO), sometimes referred to  as polyphenylene oxide (PPO), are sold under the trademark NorylTM. This film is made of an amorphous blend of polyphenylene ether and polystyrene. It has good room and low temperature impact strength, excellent hydrolytic stability, excellent dimensional stability, good heat resistance, low flammability, good insulation properties, and good processability. It also has good chemical resistance to many chemicals but not to chlorinated hydrocarbons, and some aromatic solvents. The film is suitable for a variety of applications and finds several uses in the electronic industry.

PPS (Torilina)

PPS films exhibit excellent dimensional stability, flexibility, along with high chemical and longterm heat-resistance up to about 430°F (220°C). The film also has outstanding electrical properties and is flame retardant. Because of its high temperature durability and outstanding dielectric strength, which is exceptionally stable over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies, PPS film is extensively used in electrical and electronic applications including capacitors, electrical insulation, and in various electronic components.

Silicone

Silicone films are known for their high temperature and oxidative stability, excellent low temperature flexibility, and high resistance to weathering and many chemicals, and very low surface tension. They also have excellent processability. Films made of silcone can be tailored to have extremely high water vapor permeability which is an important characteristic for healthcare applications (wound care dressing). However, silicone is seldom used as a free standing film. More often other films such as BOPP, PET, PA and paper are coated with silicone to reduce friction and to achieve a low and narrow release level (silicone coated release films).
